Neighborhood Corps Program Officer
Nicholas Thorpe is the Neighborhood Corps Program Officer for Serve DC, The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism. The Neighborhood Corps Program incorporates emergency planning, training, team building, and outreach into neighborhood teams. While living in Washington and working in government, Nicholas developed a passion for emergency preparedness. As a volunteer he served during the annual DC Caribbean Festivals, Fourth of July celebrations, and many other events. He also answered the call for volunteers to respond to the Mount Pleasant Apartment fires and to Tropical Storm Hanna. Nicholas was honored with the Mayor’s Community Service Award in May 2008.
In December 2008 Nicholas was hired by Serve DC where he hopes to further the readiness of Washington, DC communities in the event of any kind of hazard that would threaten a place he now calls home.
Nicholas is certified by the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC) at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology to develop policies and practices for preventing and responding to terrorist suicide bombings and terrorist bombing incidents. Currently, he is pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security from the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.
Nicholas hails from Irving, TX, and graduated in 2006 with a BA in history and a minor in political science from The American University in Washington, DC. While attending the university, Nicholas interned on Capitol Hill for the Senate Republican Conference and Texas Senior Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, and worked as a volunteer researcher in the Office of Presidential Appointments and Scheduling for President George W. Bush. Following graduation, Nicholas served two years in the Washington, DC office of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison as a legislative staff assistant. |
