Kathy Zarate
Capital City Fellow – Special Initiatives

Kathy serves as a Capital City Fellow with Serve DC coordinating special initiatives, including the volunteer. program. Kathy first began volunteering in high school as a tutor to at-risk youth and then continued to volunteer as an undergraduate student at Baylor University. While at Baylor, Kathy studied political science and media to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree. Kathy then joined the AmeriCorps program City Year San Antonio. As a Senior Corps member, Kathy led a team of corps members in service at an at-risk elementary school. Upon finishing her term of service, Kathy enrolled at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Kathy’s focus on law and non-profit organizations led her to London, where she spent a semester working for the human rights and civil liberties group Liberty. In May of 2007 Kathy completed her Juris Doctor and Master of Public Administration degrees before moving to the District of Columbia to begin the Capital City Fellow Program.
