Barbara Rockwood

Barbara received her bachelor of health and physical education from Xavier University and began a successful teaching career. As a professional educator, she was a curriculum writer for the Clark County School District (CCSD), served on several textbook committees, and facilitated staff professional developments. Beyond the classroom, she excelled in coaching athletics: basketball, softball, volleyball, and track and field. During the summer, she ran a sport camp and tutored reading in the upward bound program at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. In 1984, she received a master’s degree in secondary education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
She returned home to Columbus, Georgia where she worked for Muscogee County School District (MCSD) for seven years as an administrator, teacher and coach. As an administrator, she coordinated a school task force for student attendance, discipline and achievement. She taught pre-Algebra, civics, health, personal fitness, and weight training. In Virginia, she worked for the Department of Correctional Education (DCE) as a reading specialist.
She is presently the executive director of health, physical education and athletics for the District of Columbia Public Schools. She is responsible for developing, monitoring and supporting curriculum and activities that inspires DCPS learners. She provides support for school-based staff who implements the citywide programs in health and physical education, intramural athletics programs in the elementary and middle schools, junior high schools, and interscholastic athletics programs in high schools. |
