Learn and Serve America

Learn and Serve LogoLearn and Serve America is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service that supports service-learning programs in schools and community organizations throughout the United States. The programs help nearly one million students from kindergarten through college meet community needs while improving their academic skills and learning the habits of good citizenship. Learn and Serve grants are used to create new programs or replicate existing programs, as well as to provide training and development to staff, faculty, community stakeholders and volunteers.

Since 2003, Serve DC has administered Learn and Serve America grants to schools and community-based organizations to support high quality service-learning programs in Washington, DC. Through a partnership with the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education, Serve DC administers school-based sub-grants to K-12 District of Columbia Public Schools and public charter schools.

Service-learning is an integral part of Learn and Serve America. Service-Learning has expanded in schools and community-based settings in the District of Columbia and across the country. Going beyond logging community service hours to instilling a habit of service in youth, service-learning creates a comprehensive learning experience for young people that puts them at the center of their learning and equips them to be change agents in their communities. Learn more about service-learning.
