Global Youth Service Day
April 24-26, 2009

The annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), the largest volunteer event in the world, was held April 25-27, 2008. Thousands of District youth joined hands with millions of young people across the globe in the name of service.

Serve DC led the citywide event for the seventh year in a row, mobilizing District youth and their families to participate in various creative community service projects. Over 18,000 volunteers participated in 104 service projects in every ward of the city. Projects included painting murals and planting gardens at 37 schools, cleaning up the Anacostia River by removing trash and debris, educating youth on emergency preparedness, organizing a Senior Prom for local senior citizens, preparing meals for homeless individuals, and many more. The youth-led service projects made a tremendous impact in our community.

The next Global Youth Service Day will take place April 24-26, 2009. Address pressing issues in the District of Columbia by planning a service project and give youth an opportunity to join this global effort to build a stronger community.
