Mayor's Community Service Award

Countless people of all ages serve in numerous ways to improve their community every day – volunteering to make the District of Columbia a stronger and better place to live. The Mayor’s Community Service Award is an opportunity for citizens, corporations, government agencies, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations to reward and recognize volunteers for their outstanding community service. The District of Columbia Government defines service as: “A voluntary act of kindness that makes a difference in our community.”

The Mayor’s Community Service Awards Program accepts nominations in the following six categories:

  1. Mayor’s Youth Community Service Award –recognizes the contributions of youth made through community service and by encouraging more young people to serve.  Youth is defined as 24 years of age or younger.  This award is given out on a quarterly basis.
  2. Mayor’s Community Service Award (Adult) –recognizes the contributions of adults through community service and by encouraging more people to serve their communities.  This award is given out on a quarterly basis.
  3. Mayor’s Organizational Volunteerism Award – rewards one government agency, non-profit or faith-based organization engaged in voluntary community service utilizing volunteers to address unmet human service, educational, environmental, and public safety needs.  This award is given out on an annual basis.
  4. Mayor’s Corporate Volunteerism Award – rewards one corporation that engages its employees in community service projects to address unmet human service, educational, environmental, or public safety needs.  This award is given out on an annual basis.
  5. Mayor’s District of Columbia Government Employee Volunteer Award – rewards and recognizes one DC Government employee who has made a commitment to serve his/her community and has made a difference by meeting critical community needs.  This award is given out on an annual basis.
  6. Mayor’s Lifetime Community Service Award – rewards and honors one individual who has made a lifetime commitment to community service by addressing unmet human service, educational, environmental, and public safety needs.  The award is designed to recognize one individual who has completed approximately 4,000 hours of service to his/her community during his/her lifetime.  This award is given out on an annual basis.
